Three years after Margaret Thatcher became prime minister of the United Kingdom, Caryl Churchill imagined into the world the women of Top Girls. Times are tough, and these women are determined to survive in this new society that is becoming greedy and selfish. But they are all aware that success will cost them dearly. Directed by Bill Peters. The poet Mary Oliver caught their anxiety in her poem, “When Death Comes”:

“When it’s over, I don’t want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real. I don’t want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument. I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.”
