The placement audition is a dance technique class and advising session for all new and prospective dance majors and minors who will be enrolled at SFSU for the Spring 2020 semester. All students new to the dance program must attend the Dance Placement Audition on Saturday, January 25, 2020 from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon. Students will receive course recommendations and permit numbers to add dance courses that begin on Monday, January 27.
All new Dance majors and minors must enroll in and pass DANC 170 with a grade of C or in order to declare a dance major/minor or to continue on in the dance major/minor.
Incoming Freshman and Junior Transfers who applied to and have been accepted to SFSU as Dance majors are required to enroll in DANC 170 during their first semester on campus and attend the placement audition in order to receive advising regarding other dance technique courses to enroll in.
Prospective dance majors (high school and community college students), who will not yet be enrolled at SFSU in Spring 2020, may participate in the placement audition on January 25. Prospective students will receive information about the B.A. in Dance but they will not receive course recommendations. Dancers can make significant progress in 8 months; therefore, prospective students who decide to enroll at SFSU for the Fall 2020 semester will need to attend the August 2020 placement audition in order to receive course recommendations for the Fall 2020 semester.
FAQs
Q: What does the placement audition consist of?
A: The placement audition consists of a dance technique class (30 minute Pilates-based warm up, a 30 minute modern technique combination, and a 30 minute jazz combination) and an advising session.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Appropriate form fitting dance attire (leotards, tights, or leggings). No baggy shorts, sweatshirts, or dangly jewelry. Hair needs to be tied back and dancers are expected to be barefoot for the modern dance portion of the class.
Q: What are the faculty watching for?
A: Faculty are looking at dancers’ alignment and how they incorporate corrections.
Q: I have been dancing for 10+ years. Why do I have to take DANC 170?
A: Faculty expect that most students who choose to major in dance at a university will have had previous dance training. DANC 170 is designed for first semester dance majors to become acclimated to the expectations in the dance program at SF State.
Q: Can I take Level II or III technique classes.
A: During the placement audition, faculty will let you know if you are cleared to enroll in Level II/III classes concurrently with DANC 170. You must attend the placement audition in order to receive permission to enroll in Level II-III technique classes.
