Graduate Students Present Research at National Conferences

Two School of Theatre & Dance (SoTD) students were given the opportunity to present original research at national conferences this past year.

Ryan Justus, who graduated with a Master of Arts in Theatre Arts in Spring 2020 presented at the 2020 University of Hawai’i at Manoa’s School of Pacific and Asian Studies Graduate Student Conference, “Stories of Movement in Asia: Boundaries and Exile.” Justus presented “Record, Notate and Develop: Butoh-fū’s place in Western Dance,” a paper he developed in the SoTD MA course TH A 732: Asian Theatre. SoTD is also delighted to announce that Justus recently accepted a position as the head drama teacher for Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek.

Current Master of Arts student Jazmine Logan was selected to participate in two conferences. She presented a paper titled “Yoruba Theater in the UC and CSU campuses: Analyzing the Pedagogy of Yoruba Theater in California’s Public Universities” at the , 2020 Association for Theater in Higher Education Conference. She also presented this work at the 2020 Black Theatre Network Conference, where she was awarded the S. Randolph Edmonds Young Scholar award. Logan plans to apply to Ph.D. programs in order to continue developing this research. Her research is currently viewable on the Black Theatre Network Website
